Heroic tales from American GIs

martha_kearneyThis week, Martha Kearney, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s The World at One, came by the Whistledown studios to record interviews and links for the forthcoming BBC Radio 4 series GI Britain.

Martha was in the studio to record new interviews with surviving GI’s and the people who were affected by their presence in Britain. We heard powerful stories of love, friendship, and bravery. This was an amazing opportunity to capture first-person memories of an extraordinary period in British History.

This two-part series, starting on Saturday 3rd November, explores the story of the wartime GI years and their social and cultural impact.  The programmes will also feature interviews with GI brides and over 150 archive interviews from both the Imperial War Museum and the National Library of Congress.

Amazing stories from a Somali refugee

Whistledown Studios was pleased to open its doors to record an amazing story with a Somali journalist earlier today for a forthcoming production.  The Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya is home to around 750,000 refugees and is the largest refugee camp in the world.  Our interviewee grew up in the camp and has now moved to London, leaving behind relatives in the camp, which is becoming ever more dangerous. When it was set up in the early 1990s as a home to those fleeing conflicts in Eastern Africa, especially the civil war in Somalia, the camp was meant to be temporary but now it has become a refugee city.  We heard about the transformation of the camp from a short-term solution into a place where, says our interviewee, there is no hope of getting out.

Octavia Hill and Whistledown Studios

Whistledown studios

Whistledown studios feature in this week’s Radio 4 documentary about Octavia Hill, the founder of the National Trust, whose centenary is being marked this year.  As presenter Tristram Hunt revealed, when he dropped in to record his links for the programme, our chapel was actually designed and built by Octavia …and her spirit still looms over us!

Lemn Sissay

Lemn Sissay 001

Whistledown was lucky enough to welcome Lemn Sissay into our small but perfectly formed voice booth recently, to record the script for World Service Programme One Love, a tribute to the music of Bob Marley, produced by Dilly Barlow.
Also coming up soon on BBC Radio 4 is ‘Lebanon the Next Generation’ – it’s 20 years since John Mccarthy went to Beirut, in this documentary and in light of recent events, he returns to gauge the attitude of the young people of Lebanon.
